The next-to-last gathering of the summer for those partaking in the Legg Lake All-Comers
took place in midweek, with nearly 150 runners of all ages meandering through South El Monte's
Legg Lake Park. The little kids took to the flat and paved course first, with a total of 10 tikes
traversing the last half-mile of the two-mile course that the adults covered. The kids' race
was
a great start to the evening as energy-filled youth raced feverishly toward the lead bike at
the sound of the starter's gun. With no fear or sense of pace, the kids just about ran down
that pace bike! Cody Anderson, a cute kid wearing goggles, crossed the finsh line first in 3:23!
From there, the older runners hit the course, with most in the field being of high school age
but several adults also in the race. Moderate temperatures did not adversely affect race times
and it was Stephen Ems of Alta Loma HS (competing unattached, as were all) that took first
place in 9:50, the same time he ran on this course a few weeks earlier. Ems, who said he missed
the Mt. SAC Invitational last year but hopes to tackle it this time out, said he was a 2:04/4:33
performer in track and field this past season. Why'd he miss Mt. SAC, you ask? He said a
30-mile training weekend filled the schedule. :-) The final Legg Lake All-Comers race is set
for the 22nd of August. Be sure to check the DyeStatCal calendar. Major thanks to race series
organizer Dan Fitzpatrick, who has gone above and beyond in recent years to give youth ample
opportunities to compete during off-season via all-comers events. As is usually the case with
large albums from all-comers (with no rosters), there are no IDs for the runners in the album below.
We hope you enjoy and look forward to seeing you at the Legg Lake all-comers finale! -- Rich Gonzalez
